Given the church’s opposition to the use of birth control devices or pills, the threat of an eternity in hell for abortion, the encouragement to breed like flies, and numerous other indignities heaped upon nations, and especially third-world nations, I’d say the catholic church is definitely not at the forefront of advancing human rights – whatever that’s intended to mean. I also have no doubts that the church would claim to be advancing human rights when they declare that a fetus is the same as a living walking human being and that women should not have an abortion (except when the mother may die otherwise) unless women want to go to hell.
Other advancements include “condoms increase the spread of aids”. As the Python crew have aptly put it: “every sperm is sacred, every sperm is great; if a sperm is wasted, god gets quite irate”. Or how about “let the heathens spill theirs’ o’er the dusty ground – god will make them pay for each sperm that can’t be found!”

Yeah, “The Church” certainly seems to create its own reality distortion field. But then again, I think that’s the definition of “faith”.
