Why isn’t your ape agnostic? He seems like a smart cookie, so he should know how difficult it is to prove a philosophical negative assertion.

It’s not necessary to prove a negative assertion to be atheist, only realize that it’s impossible to know that knowledge about gods is impossible. Agnostics are more irrational than theists.
