Some of the characters were choosen for metaphorical reasons and other just picked because like those animals.
Toby the Chimpanzee was picked because Apes (I think) are some of the most rational animals. Pastor Bear is a Bear because I wanted some large and dangerous yet friendly animal to represent religion. HR is a cunning Mongoose (although I think he looks more like a fox), becaues he’s the con artist.
Other characters, Wilbur the dog, Thomas the Tortous, were mostly choosen because I like those animals and they’re fun to draw.

Mongoose, I always call him the fox. Oh well, now I know.
