What is most interesting is that what the post / cartoon states is absolutely true. When I was a Mormon I believeds in so much crap. Contrast is a good thing. So is the truth on things as well.

Comparing black and jewish people to Mormons is ignorant and stupid. Especially since blacks were not considered full humans in the church untill 40 years ago and jews, the christian god's "chosen people," need to become mormons in order to go to mormon heaven. Mormons say the darnest things when they get all bitchy and defensive...

@Kurofune: you will, of course, notice that it didn't say "all people" or even "most people." Without the qualifier, it just means "there are people" who believe more in dreams, etc. PLUS, it is still true for 2012!!! How many Latter-day Saints (or Christians) do you know who would rather base their worldviews and opinions from reading scientifically-based or historically-minded works than in dream-based scriptures?

I was raised Mormon in Salt Lake City in the '70s. Back then it was a point of pride to not be labeled as "Christian" but as "Mormon". I remember one lesson given by an old-timer where he specifically and emphatically said, "I'm not Christian, I'm Mormon!" It set them apart from the rest of the Jesus followers who didn't have the One True Gospel (tm). Times (and their PR firm) have changed. Now they say they are Christian, and "Mormon" is frowned upon.

It's too bad they misspelled the name of their religion. Moron is more appropriate and accurate.

Jeffery, brilliant. Perfect. Timely satire. Seriously, this strikes at the essence of foundational Mormonism in the context of modern Mormonism's obfuscating marketing scheme.

Joseph Smith was a WANTED CONFIDENCE MAN. At the time he was hiding out in the woods, he had no less than **40 FEDERAL INDICTMENTS** against him for conning people out of their money in various different ways. Had he traveled to the South after the Civil War, he would have been known as a "carpetbagger", or a "snake oil salesman".

yeah, no WONDER he was out "in the woods"! The FEDS were after him!! I'll bet he thought about it in this way, (this is my imagination only, but feel free to steal it)

"Hm, I could stay on the run for the rest of my life, always looking over my shoulder for the Feds........OR I could leave, surrounded by followers!! I'll just write a book and claim an angel dictated it, then when I migrate with my new followers, I'll just give them the slip once we're out in the country! but.....what kind of MORON would buy this story?.......wait. the name of the angel is.....I, MORON! LOLOLOLOLOLOL, naw too obvious. what if I just put the "I" at the end of "Moron"? MORONI!! yes, that's it! hilarious AND subtle enough to slip by the rubes I'll need to surround me."

What's the basis for saying that people in the 1830's believed hallucinations before reading? That's a wide generalization.

There's a great academic conference on Joseph Smith that was put on by the Library of Congress. They talk about the early treasure hunting events in terms of primary sources. The best is likely from Dr. Givens (http://www.lds.org/library/display/0,4945,510-1-3067-1,00.html)

@Jordan: The term Mormon has been accepted in use, but there's still a lingering hesitance because of the mob usage mentioned above. The present argument for annoyance isn't so much that the word is bad, but that some people believe that is the name for the church itself. Not the worst of confusions to be sure.

@Heidi: The long name of the church is a big problem. For that reason the term Mormon is seeing official use. My comment was not criticism, but further elucidation.
