I didn’t get evolution until I saw this!

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

OK, I have a confession. I’ve been a skeptic for many years, but understanding evolution and natural selection was not an easy thing for me to learn.

When I thought I had understood it, through more reading I found out that I didn’t understand it.

As Michael Shermer says evolution is hard to understand because it’s counterintutivive.  Our minds think top down but evolution works bottom up.

A great YouTube video that helped me really understand the power of natural selection and evolution is this one.  It’s a computer model of simplied ‘species’ evolution over time.  Check it out:

Are you good with tools?

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Wired Magazine has the 8 Best Non-Human Tool Users.  Check it out and see:

  • dolphins use sponges for forging,
  • chimpanzees use clubs
  • crows use wires to extract food
  • and elephants with canteens!

One grand argument for design and creationism is the uniqueness of humans. People used to think that humans were the only animals to use tools and reconize their own reflection, but once again scientific research is slowly eroding away those primitive claims.

Genetics (The other evidence for evolution)

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

To be honest, I never really enjoyed biology in school.  It seemed to be more about memorizing the names of things than actually learning how things work.

But If I had The Stuff of Life: A Graphic Guide to Genetics and DNA as my text book, I’d be singing a different tune.

It’s a great example of using comics and graphics to illustrate complex scientific ideas and a piece of work that someday, I hope to aspire to being able to create.  (God willing of course.)
